What Residents Say
In their own words
These accounts come from current and former residents and their families. Names and initials are shared with permission.
Lam Fai-Yung
Full Comfort Resident · Joined April 2025
"The thing that surprised me most was how quickly the kitchen team learned what I prefer. After about two weeks they just... knew. No fuss, no form to fill in. That kind of attention is harder to find than people realise."

Wong Mei-Ling
Daughter of Full Comfort resident
"My mother was not sure about moving at all. She visited Yau Lok once, had lunch, walked in the garden, and decided herself. I think the lack of pressure from the staff made a real difference — nobody tried to sell her anything."

Shared Dining member · Joined Jan 2025
"I live nearby and join for meals three or four times a week. The afternoon tea is the main draw for me — the steamed dumplings remind me of how my own mother used to make them. Good company, no rush."

Lee Siu-Wah
Garden Mornings + Dining · since Nov 2024
"I was sceptical about the gardening option at my age. But there is a small section of the courtyard where I now grow chives and spring onion. It sounds small but it gives the morning a purpose. That matters."

Ho Kam-Cheung
Son of Full Comfort resident
"The transparency about fees was the first thing that put us at ease. No surprises at month end. And the team responds to messages quickly — I always know what is happening, which means I worry less."

Full Comfort Resident · Joined Feb 2025
"The welcome host arranged everything when I moved in — curtains, my preferred pillow, where to put my books. I have lived alone for twenty years and I expected this to feel like an institution. It does not. It feels like home."

Resident Journeys
How three people found their way to Yau Lok
Story One
The Situation
Mrs Chan (74) had been living alone in her flat in Sheung Wan after her husband passed. Her children were concerned about her eating irregularly and spending most days alone. She was resistant to moving anywhere that felt medical or managed.
What Changed
Her daughter arranged a visit to Yau Lok on a Tuesday — specifically when afternoon dim sum was being served. Mrs Chan sat with three other residents, had congee and har gow, and told the team she would think about it. She moved in within six weeks on the Full Comfort arrangement.
After Nine Months
Mrs Chan now tends a small pot of jasmine in the courtyard, attends most morning walks, and has become known for remembering everyone's birthdays. Her daughter visits on Saturdays and often stays for lunch.
"She seems like herself again." — her daughter
Story Two
The Situation
Mr Lam (81) was a retired civil servant who had managed his own household for decades without difficulty. He was not looking for care — he wanted company, specifically during meals. His own cooking had become repetitive and uninspiring.
What Changed
He joined the Shared Dining arrangement and started coming for all three meals within his first month. The seasonal menus gave him something to discuss. The kitchen team noted his dislike of fermented tofu early on.
Two Years Later
Mr Lam upgraded to the Full Comfort Residence after a year of dining. He says the garden walks have improved his sleep considerably, and that he has fewer days when he does not leave his room.
"I came for the food. The rest I wasn't expecting." — Mr Lam
Story Three
The Situation
Dr Yeung (77) had retired from teaching at HKU and was finding her large flat in Mid-Levels hard to keep. She was intellectually active but physically tired of managing a large home alone.
What Changed
She chose the Full Comfort arrangement because of the errand support. The ability to ask for prescription collection, library returns, and post office visits without having to plan around transport was, in her words, "the most liberating thing about this place."
Eighteen Months On
Dr Yeung reads in the garden each morning and has started a small informal book discussion with two other residents over afternoon tea. She still travels occasionally and returns easily.
"I did not know I was so tired until I stopped having to do everything." — Dr Yeung
